8 Questions with Kevin Hayes, owner of The Village Diner

The Village Diner is a locally owned business located in Johnson City. Everything is made fresh and from scratch. They offer great daily homemade soups and daily specials. The Village Diner is open from 7am to 3pm Monday -Saturday.


What inspired you to start your business?
My love of scratch made food and my passion for people!

What products / services do you offer?
We are a small 42 seat Diner offering both Breakfast and Lunch.

What is something that your business is known for, that sets you apart from other competitors?
What sets us apart is the level of customer service we provide our customers. We work hard to create a welcoming atmosphere and stand behind our service as well as our food.

What has been your business’ proudest moment?
Our proudest moment has been being voted the #21 Best Diner in America!

What has been the biggest risk you ever took for your business?
The biggest risk I have taken is taking all of my 401k retirement funds and investing them in myself! You will never soar if you don’t first jump!

Tell us something interesting / fun about your business.
This location has been a community meeting place since 1960! That’s 59 years of slinging hash on this corner in Johnson City.

What’s the most popular product / service that you sell?
Our most popular products are our pumpkin pancakes, banana’s foster French toast and our Signature burgers.

What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start their own business?
My best advice would be that if you find something that you are passionate about, that really drives you. Try to make that your career and do it! Have a good plan and surround yourself with people smarter than you.
