Family and Business Banking Go Hand in Hand for the Vergasons

“I’ve banked with TSB since the 4th grade; now my granddaughter is, too!”

My father used to take me to Tioga State Bank’s office in Spencer where he did his banking. In 4th grade, I remember we had these envelopes at school. You’d put quarters in and save your money to put it in the bank. I’ve banked with TSB ever since. Fast forward to 2023. My son Aaron and his plumbing, heating and cooling business in Ithaca bank with TSB, and Aaron’s 9-year-old daughter, my granddaughter, is learning about financial literacy by saving at TSB. It’s come full circle with this bank. They helped our family on day one, and they are still helping us four generations later.

I started VTI with a single machine in my dad’s barn. I went to TSB in 1986 for a line of credit to build more, and the rest is history. We did try a large, international bank one time. It went okay at first, but when times got tough, things did not go so well with that bank. I went back to TSB and have been with them ever since. Being with the local community bank has been a Godsend for us. It’s really made all the difference to build a relationship there, to know the people, and to know that they have our back. We go to the bank with an idea or project, for example a new “Cobot” (robot that works with a person to improve productivity). The bank will look at it and see how it will save us manual labor, and they’ll finance it. They have even partnered with other banks when we needed very large amounts of capital to build our new addition. TSB finds creative solutions to our problems, and we appreciate that about them.

Whether it was a loan for a car, a mobile home, or a house, TSB has said ‘yes’ when we’ve needed financing. Susan Allen has worked with our family on home equity loans. Jon Ward has worked with us on the business side. Before them, it was three generations of the Fisher family, then Ralph Kelsey and George Bowen, looking out for us. There’s a continuity there. They know us, they listen to our needs, and they always come back with a way to work things out.

“TSB builds holistic relationships with its customers…and the community.”

My wife Kathe and I attend some of the special events TSB throws for its customers. Whether it’s a cooking demo, a dueling piano competition, or a local play or concert, it’s great to meet other folks from the bank and their families, other customers, other community members….it’s just a nice hometown feel. It’s good to know what is happening around town, who else may be starting a business in the community, or where the new local produce stand is. TSB facilitates that kind of thing. They really build holistic relationships with their customers and the community as a whole. Plus, they sponsor so many good causes in the community through their TSB Foundation. For me, it’s all about family and community.
