TSB Chip Card FAQs

What is a chip card?

A chip card, or EMV card, has an embedded chip on the front, which provides additional security at transaction when used with a chip enabled reader at merchant locations and ATMs.

Are chip cards more secure?

Chip cards feature an embedded microchip that provides additional protection from fraud and unauthorized use. The microchip is encrypted, safeguarding your personal information during the transaction. When used at locations and ATMs that are chip-enabled (have chip readers), the data stored on the chip is more difficult to counterfeit or copy.

Can I use my new chip card at locations and ATMs that are not chip enabled/do not have chip readers?

Yes. More and more locations and ATMs are becoming chip-enabled, but your debit card will still work at locations without a chip reader. In these locations, you can use your card like you would a non-chip card by swiping your card.

How do I know if a location or ATM is chip enabled?

Look for a 2 inch slot near the pin pad at the bottom of the card reader. This is where you will insert your chip card for your transaction.
